Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited is one of the
eleven NNPC subsidiary companies created in March 1988.
The Refinery, which was commissioned in September 1978 with an
initial capacity of 10,000 barrels per stream day of crude oil, was
debottlenecked in 1987 toa capacity of 125,000 barrels per stream
day.
The Petrochemical plants (polypropylene and Carbon Black), which
were built to optimise the refinery, were commissioned in March
1988.
An HF-alkylation unit was added to the refinery in 1988.
The main business of WRPC is to process crude oil into Petroleum
and Petrochemical products.
WRPC configuration is as follows:
Atmospheric Distillation Unit
Naphtha Hydrotreating Unit
Kerosene Hydro treating Unit
Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit
WRPC produces the following products:
Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol)
Hard Carbon Black Pellets
Power Plant and Utilities
WRPC is independent and self sufficient in Power and
Utilities production.
The power plant is made up of:
3 steam turbo generators of 15 MW each.
3 gas turbines of 30,30 & 20 MW respectively.
2 steam boilers producing a total of 220 tons/hr at
82kg/cm2.
2 steam boilers producing a total of 190 tons/hr at
42kg/cm2.
2 waste heat boilers attached to Two gas turbines and
each producing 55 tons./hr of 82kg/cm2 steam.
2 nitrogen plants producing liquid/gaseous nitrogen.
Compressed Air system forinstrument/service air.
Water Effluent Treatment facility.
Concern for the Environment
Warri Refining and Petrochemicals Company Limited,
as a matter of policy, is very concerned about the
environment in which it operates. Money and effort
were therefore not spared in providing, at inception, the
most modern and efficient waste water treatment
facilities.
An elaborate system of underground sewers carry the
effluent to two 15,000 cubic metre reserviours where
oil is separated out gravimetrically. The remaining oil
in the water is removed in two biological treating
units. The final effluent is environmentally friendly.
Among products on offer are:
- Unstenched LPG for aerosol purposes.
- Straight-run Gasoline (SRG): (Solvent to Vegetable
Oil Refiners)
The Polypropylene plant with a production capacity
of 35,000 metric tons/year produces Homopolymer
for use in the following industries.
House-hold articles moulding (furniture, crates etc)
Industrial article moulding (Pipes, containers etc)
Mechanical/Electrical appliances
Automotive wares (Battery cases, pumpers, dash-
board, etc)
The Carbon Black Plant which produces 18,000
metric ton/year has the potential to produce 15
diferent grades of carbon black product.
Through an in-house maintenance crew carries out
maintenance of WRPC plant and equipment, about
90% of the spare parts needed for this maintenance
function is sourced outside the country.
Certified local manufacturers are encouraged to
supply these spares which include - Shafts, Shaft
Sleeves, Seals, Teflon-o-Rings, Gears, bolts and
Nuts, Flanges etc.
